PEMBA Let your mind drift to the most beautiful Island in East Africa



Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, June 2, 2016- On the Swahili coast of the Zanzibar Archipelago in East Africa, lies semi-autonomous Pemba Island. As one of the world’s leading Clove producer in only 988 square kilometers, the Island is divided into two regions of Chake-Chake and Mkoani. It is found on the North of its twin Island Unguja.

Most of Pemba’s inhabitants are Swahili speakers who descended from Persian Gulf and came for business in the East African coast around 10thC and later conquered by the Arab traders and Sultans.

Pemba and Unguja has formed the Paradise Islands of Zanzibar, which later came to join Tanganyika in 1964 to form Tanzania. Now Zanzibar is one of the most important destination in Tanzania’s Tourism, with the growth of over 9.6% annually.

Pemba, also popularly known as the ‘Green Island’ or ‘Al Jazeera Al Khadra’, is a beautiful tourist destination with numerous tourists attractions such as unspoiled diving areas with very rich marine life, famous spiritual mystics and physical healers. It is also home to amazing white sandy beaches and tourism sites such as Jozan Forest reserve, the Ancient forest which is the home of flying fox.

You can visit Chake Chake Museum and enjoy snorkeling around Misali Island with amazing colorful fishes. Experience the popular bullfight which was introduced by the Portuguese and the beautiful archeological sites such as Ras Mkumbuu and the 10th Century Mosque, one of the oldest Muslim Settlements in Africa.


Apart from cloves, the Pemba dwellers also use the fertile place for small scale agriculture to grow rice, coconuts, banana, cassava and red beans.
