DFID Director General Economic Development and Chief Economist visit Tanzania

From Tuesday 3rd to Thursday 5th May, the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) Tanzania office hosted its Director General for Economic Development, David Kennedy, and Chief Economist, Professor Stefan Dercon, for a three-day official visit. Their visit was to understand the economic challenges facing Tanzania and how the UK can support Tanzania’s drive for industrialisation under its five-year development plan, including by realising the potential of its youthful population.

Mr Kennedy and Prof. Dercon focussed particularly on agriculture manufacturing, infrastructure and urban development. They met with a range of private sector, civil society and media figures to discuss the business environment, government plans for industrialisation, and wider development challenges.
  • They visited Tanzania’s largest garment factory – discussing successes and challenges with Tooku Garments management.
  • Smallholder agriculture remains the main source of employment and income for Tanzanians and they participated in a roundtable discussion on smallholder farmer development, focussing on how best donors might provide support.
  • They were also briefed on commercial agriculture and DFID’s investment in a 20-year tea project in Njombe district, designed to break the ‘vicious cycle’ of low returns and low investment in the sector.
  • Prof. Dercon made a field trip to Kilimanjaro region, meeting with smallholder poultry farmers, the Chair of the Tanzania Horticulture Association and Equity for Tanzania Limited, a business providing equipment leasing to small enterprises and farmer groups.
  • On urban infrastructure, they visited Dar es Salaam port, seeing the ambitious plans the Tanzanian government has for modernisation and how DFID support will help meet these.
